5th North American Forest Ecology Workshop

June 12 to June 16 2005
In the Gatineau Region near Ottawa

The 2005 North American Forest Ecology Workshop will be held at the Château Cartier Relais (Aylmer, Quebec) in the Gatineau Hills near Ottawa, Canada. This region represents a unique transition between hardwood forests to the south and mixed forests to the north, as well as having an east-west moisture gradient with species typical of northeastern North America dominating mesic sites but with mid-western species occurring in some xeric locations. These forests are also subject to pressures from urbanization and agriculture to the south and forest management to the north. All of the above makes this area ideal for exploring questions about ecosystem management in different landscapes and forest communities. These questions include: Is any single approach appropriate across the entire matrix? How confident are we about the success of existing conservation efforts? Is the natural disturbance paradigm the most effective management strategy for achieving sustainability goals? How effective are restoration efforts for severely modified ecosystems (e.g., fragmented landscapes and degraded species)? Where are we at with current issues such as enhanced forest productivity, plantation management, and carbon sequestration? All of this and more will be discussed at the Workshop.

Participants will have the opportunity to submit manuscripts for a special
journal edition of the Canadian Journal of Forest Research and for those
working on carbon in the journal Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change.
