Proposal for an international meeting
Québec City 2001

Overview

The proposal: an international meeting on the economy of solidarity from a North-South perspective. This conference—a continuation of the July 1997 meeting in Lima—is to be organized and held in Québec in 2001 and will deal with three main challenges:

  • how to go beyond the micro-economic level and expand the venues and scope of our action;
  • how to use our strategic position to help bring together the different elements of the economy of solidarity worldwide in order to strengthen it from both an economic (as a means for socio-economic development) and a political (as a socio-political issue) standpoint;
  • how to more strongly affirm the solidarity that exists between populations in the societies of both the North and the South.

Organization of the meeting in Québec: In order to begin organizing the meeting in Québec, we intend to form a Québec-based action committee that will work in cooperation with Peru's Grupo internacional economia solidaria as well as other partners worldwide (to be contacted) in order to make this gathering a truly international one. The action committee would be responsible for:

  • preparing a plan to solicit support in order to begin the organizing process;
  • setting up an International Organizing Committee for the conference.

While preparing its plan to solicit support, the action committee would also begin making initial contacts in Africa, Oceania and Asia.

The organizing committee must be representative both in its composition and its ability to make itself heard on the international scene. It will be made up of representatives who have been delegated by various movements: cooperative, community, union and international cooperation organizations; women's groups; and social economy research networks.

Target participants: all those involved and interested in projects, initiatives, organizations and undertakings related to the economy of solidarity such as cooperative, community, union and international cooperation organizations; women's groups; and social economy research networks.
