Well-known figure on the Montreal scene, Frederic Metz
has a devoted fan club, and some arch-enemies…perhaps. For more
than thirty years, this colorful character has left no one indifferent.
His detractors condemn his sometimes arbitrary judgements, his forthrightness
often at the expense of diplomacy, his contradictions, and his occasional
extravagant behaviour. His admirers, on the other hand, like his unfailing
integrity, his truthfulness, his intelligence, his common sense, his contradictions,
and his occasional extravagant behaviour.
Site of the 1967 Universal Exhibition, Montreal welcomes the entire world,
including a gangling Swiss armed with great ambitions and a diploma in
Graphic Design who chooses to move to Montreal from his native Neuchatel.
Almost immediately his design career takes off and interesting contracts
start to multiply, earning him several prestigious international certificates
and awards.
He handles the widest possible variety of projects: in 1969, for Browns
Shoes, creation of a black logo on a metallic background; in the early
70’s, elaboration of graphic concepts for Mirabel Airport and for
Hotel Meridien; the entire graphic image for restaurants in the Royal
Bank Plaza in Toronto; logos for the Museum of Decorative Arts in Montreal,
and for designer Oscar de la Renta, to name just a few. He is also responsible
for applying a controversial accent on the letter A in the UQAM logo(University
of Quebec at Montreal), the media coverage of which resulted in very public
discussions among linguists. But does it matter? Absolutely not. He thrives
on controversy and really does not have much to say in favour of the politically
correct.
During his various directorships, he instituted the Graphic Design program
to which he continues to give an international scope, as he does also
to the Design Center at the University of Quebec.
Over and above his professorial activities, Frederic Metz is regularly
asked to comment on a variety of subjects in different media, both electronic
and written. He has produced a regular monthly column in a graphic design
magazine : « grafika », he is a regular participant in a daily
radio program at CBC, where he delivers incisive comments on various products
currently on the market. He has been asked to sit on several judging panels,
conferences and seminars, and has been chosen by his peers to be a member
of the prestigious AGI association (Alliance Graphique Internationale),
Type Directors Club New York (TDC) and was chosen Honorary Member by the
Quebec Society of Graphic Designers (SDGQ).
In spite of such a punishing schedule, Frederic Metz enjoys moments of
spare time when he can indulge in activities which may be as eclectic
and varied as organizing parties large and small, photographing unusual
commercial or street signs, collecting shopping bags, and satisfying a
strange passion for logos taken off discarded refrigerators.
